Into the Woods – Widowmaker

A fallen giant after the storms that recently hit the Cape Town coastline, ‘Widowmaker’ takes its name from the eucalyptus trees known for unexpectedly dropping their branches during severe weather. Beneath this tension between beauty and threat lies the unmistakable perfume released from their broken limbs.

The fallen trunk becomes both wound and monument, its exposed timber resting on the undergrowth marks collapse and renewal. There is a strange beauty in this destruction… the rustling leaves, darkening vegetation and the slow return of organic matter to the soil.

For me, one of nature’s most profound gestures is that endings are rarely final. Decay becomes transformation and collapse gives way to regeneration. Within this quiet ecological drama, beauty emerges not despite impermanence, but because of it.
