Into the Woods – Kodama (Tree Spirit)

This was a photo Julie Maunder took while visiting Italy. It is an old olive tree. When I saw the photo I just wanted to paint it, the connectivity of the branches to the world outside was just breathtaking, yet it is all sheltered under this big dark umbrella of green. It reminded me of the Japanese ‘Kodama” which is what they call a tree spirit.
