St Joseph Lillies in Monochrome
St Joeseph Lillies’ history can be tracked to Roman legend. Juno, queen of the gods, was feeding her son Hercules, some of her milk fell from the mythical heavens. The drops of milk formed these beautiful, fragrant white lilies. St Joseph Lilies, also known as Easter Lilies, are often associated with purity, virtue, and rebirth. They are commonly used in religious ceremonies and are considered a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
These flowering bulbs originated from the southern islands of Japan and were introduced to the Western world in the 19th century. They were first brought to the United States by a World War I soldier who found them growing in a field in Bermuda.
St Joseph Lilies are known for their sweet and captivating fragrance. The scent is often described as a combination of fresh citrus and floral notes, making it a popular choice for perfumes and scented candles. In Japan, they are associated with good luck and prosperity. In Christianity, they are often associated with the Virgin Mary and are used to honor her during religious celebrations. It seemed fitting to paint them in black and white.
