Vincent van Gogh wasn’t the only sunflower painter, Diego Rivera, Alfred Gockel and Paul Gauguin were influenced by them too. For me they bring memories of childhood. My grandfather used to farm with them in the Heilbron district and I remember learning to drive through these majestic yellow fields. What’s facinating about them is that they tract the sun (heliotropism) but as their biological clock slows down with maturity they just face east so they warm up faster. I too prefer sunrise to sunset so we have something in common. Yellow is associated with warmth, happiness, fun and friendship. In Japan it is the colour of courage.
