Into the Woods – Palm Salute
This gleeful painting captures the Phoenix reclinata, or Wild Date Palms, that salute you as you walk through Arderne Gardens. The palms’ arching, bright green fronds fan out in graceful crowns, while aged fronds drape below, creating a their ‘petticoats’. The palms has a clump-forming growth, as multiple stems rise from the base, adding depth and texture.
Amidst the foliage, creamy-white flowers bloom subtly, reflecting the species’ typical flowering period from August to October. The ripe, orange-brown fruit peeks through, hinting at the palm’s edible nature and its connection to the true date palm.
The background softly portrays the lush surroundings of Arderne Gardens, with other exotic trees and tranquil pathways enhancing the scene’s serenity. The warm, earthy tones and delicate lighting evoke the hardy, evergreen nature of this species, which thrives in both cultivated and wild landscapes.
Known as the Senegal Date Palm, the Phoenix reclinata is celebrated here for its ornamental beauty and functional role as a natural screen or windbreak. This artwork pays homage to the palm’s resilience and elegance, firmly rooted in Southern Africa’s botanical heritage.
